IRRI Mexico is dedicated to promoting sustainable use of natural resources. We provide education, develop new technologies, and install systems that help low income families meet their basic energy, water, and sanitation needs in a sustainable way. Our projects aim to empower families, communities, and businesses to produce their own clean energy, obtain their own water, and manage their own resources and wastes in ways that benefit them and the environment simultaneously.
We believe that today’s great social and environmental problems have solutions. Help us work towards them.

A neighborhood presentation on rainwater harvesting in Cultura Maya (Isla Urbana’s focus community).
A group of neighbors organized and called together people from the community and asked IRRI-Isla Urbana to talk to them about rainwater harvesting on Octuber 18th. The chronic shortage of water suffered here has generated a great deal of interest from the community, in collaboration with whom we are working to prove that rainwater harvesting is a real and viable solution to the crisis.

The Global Youth Action Network Mexico organizing at a Mazahua indian community in Villa Victoria, October 2009.
Gyan and IRRI together installed a rainwater harvesting system at a school here this october. The school has no access to municipal water and instead has depended on buying water from tank trucks, the cost of which is a burden to a community with very few resources. The complexity and social inequality of the water crisis is exemplified here since the community is only hundreds of yards from the Villa Victoria reservoir which supplies Mexico City.
We just completed our latest rainwater harvesting course in Mexico City this October 10th and 11th!
We covered all the basics, from the current water crisis with its roots and causes, to the technical knowledge necessary to install a household system. Components, instalation and water treatment/purification were taught and followed by a site visit to one of our working systems in the neighborhood. We will be offering many more rainwater harvesting courses and lectures as we work to help spread the understanding of the technique through Mexico City. Check in with us to find out about upcomming courses!

Thanks Jsun and the Guadalajara crew for teaching our latest SEI-supported solar energy course there! May there be many more! Solar energy is still in its early stages of growth in Mexico, but as one of the world’s sunniest countries, it is a technology with nowhere to go but up
